Smart phone: a congolomerate of technologies?

Consider a hypothetical scenario of a person using his/her cell phone for various of his activities. He starts his new bluetooth device enabled car, which instantly pairs with the phone, whilst he loads the latest music player on it. Loading his destination address on the GPS application, connected to the phone with a pair of bluetooth headsets, listening away to his favorite songs, is interrupted when he receives a call. Without having to move his hands away from the steering wheel, he completes the call and the music is back on. On the way to his destination, he halts to check his emails, and yes this place is deserted and no he doesn't have a laptop. He easily picks up the phone, logs on to his email and zoom he is on back on the track!!!

All of the above, and considering more activities that he could have performed, using his cell phone, during his journey, it sure seems like a this device was all he needed.

Is this leading us to the fact that one device, a one man show is a lot better than having a gallery of devices, each one serving a purpose. This smart phone would be an ultimate solution to most people, considering the fact that they do not now need to carry along 'n' number of devices with them. A traveller needn't worry about forgetting to take a camera with him. And added to his, if the cell phone comes with the "thin" attribute, there is absolutely nothing more one can ask!

But on another note, as wireless companies are striving to encompass as many technological aspects as possible, onto one thin looking cell phone, it is becoming incredibly challenging as well.

Based on recent studies, "An overwhelming 90 percent of respondents gave the iPhone higher marks than their own handset and over 40 percent of respondents rated the iPhone much better across key functional categories - including music player, web browsing, voice mail, and phone call management - indicating real innovation in designing a user experience." It has been claimed that iPhone is a one such conglomerate in context. Having 8 GB memory on phone is a great feature, but not having 3G connectivity can lead to further degradation of data transfer rates. Also it has been brought to notice how much a wireless industry giving birth to a device, would play a role. Being a jack of the entertainment industry does not necessarily mean a jack of all arts, is what some people argue!

So, to summarize, manufacturing a smart phone, in the WiFi industry, seems to be associated with having to battle with trade offs. Memory, "thin" concept, data transfer rates are some of the factors that play a big role in making sure there ain't a show stopper in the smart phones world!!

Cell phone - A utility?

Years ago, people treated most of the basic needs, which are known to us as "Utilities", as luxuries. For instance it was a surprise that a tap when turned gives water, a touch of a finger on a switch would light up the entire house. Today we know atleast most parts of the world don't have to be surprised at these wonders. Its not different from the fact that we breathe air and we don't realize it.

Although, most of us concur the above fact, it is intricate to categorize the

various materials in our life as utilities, we cannot live without.

One such material at question is our very own communicating tool, "Cell Phones". Have we really become accepted this device as our everyday utility that has become a necessicity?

How-stuff-works.com quotes "To start with, one of the most interesting things about a cell phone is that it is actually a radio. -- an extremely sophisticated radio, but a radio nonetheless. " Perhaps one did not imagine, then, a radio turned into cell phone would completely change the way people communicate today.

A cell phone in itself is a compilation of several utilites that it provides people in various scenarios. Text messaging, applications involving games, pictures, sounds and the like, wireless applications(WAP) are some of them, apart from the ability to make calls to anywhere in the world!

Various technologies are emerging that claim to make this device more of a utility than just an option for most of us. GSM, GPRS, 3G technologies have made it possible for faster data rates and coverage of network.

Also with that goes, needless to mention, cell phone network providers are growing in number as well. Infact interestingly subscription paying sytem that exists for our utilities like electricity, gas and what have you, holds good for cell phone bills as well!

As you read this post, several cell phones are probably buzzing around the world waiting to connect to someone!
Can we really fathom a world without cell phones?
